I have found myself many times wondering what my Confederate ancestors would think if they could come back for a day and see what has become of all that they fought for so long ago. I catch myself daydreaming of what would happen if I had access to a time machine and could go back to the 1861 through 1865 time period and bring back one of my forefathers in grey to today's South. I can just imagine the wonder his face would reflect at all the technology of today. How would I explain the telephone, much less the cell phone, and the television? I would love to take him for a SLOW ride in a car. I would take him to Walmart and then out to the airport. I would take him to the hospital to see how far health care has advanced. I would show him the computer and how he could visit foreign lands and even space at the tip of his fingers. I would spend the better part of the day sharing all of todays wonders with him but then I wonder could I tell him the rest...
How could I explain how we as Southerners are still under attack 140 years later by Northern liberals and racist "civil rights" groups? How could I, on one hand show him pictures of the carvings on Stone Mountain, and on the other explain how those carvings are threatened with destruction? How could I explain the eradication of his history and the legacy he left us as Southerners? What could I say to justify what has become of the South that he loved so dear? How could I explain the complacencey of the majority of Southerners to the constant attack on our heritage?
What would he say to all of this? I wonder if he would say how disapointed he would be of all that he had seen on his visit to the future. Would he say that our technology seems to have mostly helped to make us all fat and lazy? Would he say that the cars are nice but that they had helped destroy the air we breathe and that all the pavement had replaced the grass and woodlands? Would he enjoy Walmart but couldn't understand the massive garbage dumps piled high with discarded material goods that we just turn around and purchase again and again because we have become such a throw away society? Would he say that the hospital was great but that our Doctors have been placed on too high a pedestal in society and what a shame it was that his brothers in arms couldn't have had but a fraction of the care that is given daily? Would he beam with pride as I explained the SCV only to feel remorse that there are only 35,000 members and not 35,000,000?
Maybe the trip through time isn't such a good idea after all. It was an interesting visit Grandpa but maybe your better off back in your own time where as complicated as life was it was better for you then. DEO VINDICE!
